The building of Devonshire which is in the middle of the University of New Castle includes all the necessary equipment for it to be called as the most eco friendly building. Going according to the commitment to the environment by the university, the construction includes everything that ranges from renewable energy materials to recycled material. This six storey building of the university includes solar panels in the gazed southern altitude in order to allow as much as possible natural light inside the building. The designed blinds help in managing the heat. There is also an intelligent system which allows all the shades to be automatically opened and closed in order to allow the right amount of sunlight entering the windows. Apart from adjusting according to the time of the day they also adjust according to the season.
This solar shading has been designed by the Dewjoc architecture firm as they have made a good use of the large roof area of the green building. The building is a home to solar modules as it generates nearly 25 KW of power. The building also makes a good home to the rain water harvest system as it collects the rain water and sends it to a 20,000 liter underground tank. If the tank overflows then the excess water is sent to the geothermal tank that has a capacity of nearly 40,000 liters. The entire system is so perfectly designed that the water in the geothermal tank is sent to the heat sink which further acts as the cooling agent for the entire building.
