Solar cookers

Solar cooker is a device which makes use of the solar energy to cook food, in short, acts as an oven. It helps to reduce the usage of electric energy as it requires no operational costs to run or does not require any fuel. Solar cookers may be used for indoor as well as outdoor cooking, especially in those areas where consumption of fuels is minimized to a great extent. Solar cookers do not use any kind of fuel and hence, one can avoid any mishaps caused due to fire. Solar cookers are black in color from inside as the color absorbs a lot of heat. The solar cookers are based on some of the principles which are concentration of the sunlight by the help of mirrors, conversion of light energy into heat energy, specific design which helps to trap the heat.
The most interesting feature of the solar cooker is that it provides the hottest food during hot summers. The solar cooker resembles the shape a rectangular black box. The box consists of the one or more reflectors which help in trapping the solar energy. Generally, the reflectors are made up of the aluminum foils. The interior is such that the walls should be reflective to reduce the possibility of the heat loss. The temperature the cooker can withstand is up to 150 degree Celsius without melting or gassing off. Since most of the heat escapes through the top of the glass or the plastic, small amount of insulation in the walls is done. Dry grass, sheets of cardboard, rags etc are used as insulators.
